Standish High School
583 E. Cedar Street, Standish, Arenac County, Michigan 48658 |
|
Historical Tidbits |
- Also called Arenac Central High School, Standish High School was located in the town of Standish.
- In the 1958-1959 year book, the address given names the school "Arenac Central High", however the name plate over the door of the school proclaimed the building as "Standish High School".
- Although I'm unsure as to when the school was built, it closed during the middle of the 1959-1960 school year when the new school on Grove Road opened.
- Presently there's an elementary school on the site where the old high school was.

Standish-Sterling Central High School
2401 Grove Road, Standish, Arenac County, Michigan 48658 |
|
Historical Tidbits |
-
Standish-Sterling High opened in its new location during the middle of the 1959-1960 school year.
-
Standish High and Sterling High merged from their respective communities to form the new high school.
-
As indicated from old year books, one reason for the merge--and the new school that went with it--was overcrowding.
-
Mascot: Panther
- Update from Norman Daniels, Class of 1961 - "When the Standish and Sterling school districts consolidated around 1959 the school district was named Arenac Central for the 1959-1960 school year. Those of us with varsity jackets had the name Arenac Central on them. At the end of the school year the school board, for some unknown reason, felt that the name Arenac Central did not properly identify the school district and renamed it Standish-Sterling School District beginning with the 1960-1961 school year. At the time, the students were very unhappy with the name change. We were Arenac Central. The school board changed the name in spite of the objections of the student body."
